Little Red Riding Hood: Halloween Costume DIY and M6187 Pattern Review

Happy November! I know this is probably the 12th time you’ve heard it today but holy crap I can’t believe its November already!! Today I’m sharing my Halloween costume from yesterday. I’m so pleased with how it turned out! See the pattern review after the photos for more info. Enjoy…

Pattern Used: McCall’s 6187

Pattern Description: Misses’/Children’s/Girls’ Storybook Costumes

Pattern Sizing: Kids’ (3-4, 5-6, 7-8), Misses’ (Small, Medium, Large, X-Large)

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes, it did, although with alterations.

Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes, they were pretty straightforward.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I wanted a little red riding hood costume, preferably not too revealing, and this pattern fit the bill. It was also on sale at JoAnn’s at the time so really a win win. I only wish it came in a numbered size range as opposed to Small/Medium/Large.

Fabric Used: The red is a cotton twill while the black and white fabrics are a cotton spandex mix. All of the fabric, notions, and trim are from JoAnn’s.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I cut the adult size small but had a feeling it was going to be too big. On the bodice I ended up taking each seam (front, sides, back and center back) down from 5/8″ to 1 inch. All in all it was almost 3 inches that I graded down. After that the fit was great but had I not done so the dress would’ve been way too large. I also took 4 inches off the hem of the skirt and apron. With those adjustments I was able to get my garment to look like the one on the pattern envelope. I will add that I ran out of time and did not hem the cape but it held up quite well. I would hem it though before I wear it again.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Yes, I would sew it again but I don’t foresee myself needing another costume any time soon. Maybe next Halloween? I would recommend it to others but be weary of sizing adjustments if you are on the petite side.

Conclusion: I love the way it turned out and I received a lot of compliments when I wore it. I even won a prize in our office’s costume contest! 🙂
